1. Be Excellent To Each Other
We live in a very diverse environment. We require consent to withdraw from any discrimination of any type or form. Any behavior or presentation that objectifies or belittles others will be halted, with the presenters immediately disqualified and removed from the event.
2. Art and Tech / Skills and Ideas
Participants from Art and Tech are invited to register with their portfolio indicating either their project ideas or skills and knowledge.
We encourage you to sign up as individuals rather than already established teams. Because we think one of the main objectives of this hack is the opportunity to connect and work together in an international team. In a mixture of online social interaction, virtual bar camps, workshops and lectures, and physical events at certain locations we will help build up teams and bring ideas and skills to work.
3. Dates and Timing
- Nov 14, 2022: Registration is open – You can register with skills or ideas, or by creating a project
- Nov 14, 2022-May 15-2023 Team building – We encourage you to build international Teams, consisting of artists and coders, max 5 persons
- May 2 – 4, 2023: Lectures and workshop series at KAUST, Saudi Arabia
- May 15, 2023: Deadline to submit
The Hackathon will happen as a hybrid event. Any participation on an online basis is possible and can be fulfilled here, via devpost. In addition, we are working on a couple of in-person events and local hubs. If it is possible to come along and makes sense to you, you are invited to show and connect physically. 5. Eligibility and Registration
Participants must be of legal age in their respective countries.
The Hackathon is open to a global audience.
Registering for the Hackathon is free of charge.
Participants are to ensure that the personal information provided upon registration online is true and accurate.
Individuals may join more than one team. Each team consists of min. one coder + one artist.
Participants shall bear all expenses in relation to their participation in the Hackathon. They acknowledge that they have no right to compensation or reimbursement of any kind.
Before the submission deadline, teams will submit working links to their GitHub repositories for the judges to be able to verify/test the application.
As part of the judging criteria, teams may be required to show their projects to the panel of judges. This will be done via Zoom screen-sharing.
Teams are strongly encouraged to present a demo of what you have built. This demo may include a pitch, and demo, and may take any electronic format that can be presented over Zoom.
Teams are encouraged to present what they have done even if your hack is broken or you weren’t able to finish.
It's okay if you didn't finish your hack. Demoing your team’s progress and product is a chance to share with others what you learned and what you tried to build— the value is in your ideas!
Winners may be announced on SAAI Factory’s and its partner’s websites and/or social media channels. We may require winners to send us their personal images and/or other limited personal information, in order for us to announce the results. By participating in the hackathon, participants agree to the collection and usage of personal data that they have provided to us for the purpose of announcing the winner of the hackathon on public channels.
7. Judging Criteria
The Hackathon will be evaluated by a panel of judges selected by SAAI Factory.
One of the main goals is to recognize the potential of the projects for further development and subsequent presentation to the public. Selected projects and prototypes from the Hackathon will be shown in subsequent showcases and exhibitions around the world, such as the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, the AI Biennial in Essen, the KAUST University in Saudi Arabia, or online at nexmuseum.io.
Entries will be judged on the following criteria, and according to the sole and absolute discretion of the judges:
Creativity and Originality
How unique and creative is the project from an artistic perspective? How original and innovative are the depicted concept, vision, and visual theme? What are the references to contemporary art?
Art and Technology
How effective is the infusion of technology to enhance the work? Does it integrate deep learning in an innovative, unexpected way? Is it showing a new approach towards data input, data output or dataset ? The level of complexity of the usage of AI/ML/DL.
Potential for Further Development - Feasibility
Does the proposed prototype have the potential to grow and deliver the imagined result in the post-production stage? Are the team’s skills able to maintain and improve the project? Did they utilize the tools in the best way?
Clarity and Quality
Is the depicted theme clear to the viewer? How well is the concept reflected on the piece? Does the artwork stand on its own as a complete and outstanding work of art? Does it work outside of the competition ?
Can the project inspire other ideas?
Scale of Awesome
Something in the project that is beyond the expected, surprising, and exciting.
8. Intellectual Property Rights.
All submissions remain the intellectual property of the teams and individuals that developed them. We require that all code written in this competition will be made accessible through a public repository. By submitting an entry, entrants agree that SAAI Factory will have a fully paid, non-exclusive license to use such entry for judging the entry. Entrants agree that SAAI Factory shall have the right to promote the submission and use the name, likeness, voice and image of all individuals contributing to a submission, in any materials promoting or publicizing the hackathon and its results, during the Hackathon Period and thereafter. Some Submission components may be displayed to the public. Other Submission materials may be viewed by the judges for screening and evaluation. By submitting an entry or accepting any prize, entrants represent and warrant that submitted content is an original work, and is not in breach of any intellectual rights of any other party.
